News from La Perla

Writer: La Perla de FrigilianaLa Perla de Frigiliana

It has been somewhat breath-taking beginning of the year. We have had enough visitors to keep us busy on a daily basis, but we have also taken out every bit of the free time in between the visits. We have done the hikes we haven’t done yet, gone to Sierra Nevada for skiing and did a huge renovation on the pool and the garden.

January and February are the best months for us to go hiking. Mainly for two reasons. The climate is perfect for us and our dog Isla to do longer hikes and the Pine Processionary Caterpillars are not out yet. We don’t want these little creatures to sneak out on Isla, since it is the habit of the caterpillars to move over the ground in long head-to-tail processions and to sting with hairs anyone who attempts to molest them. You can see their nests already in the pine trees, but they are not out yet. The watch-out season for them lasts until the end of April – mid May.

It hasn’t been the best season in Sierra Nevada Ski yet, but they already have a fair number of slopes and lifts open. Our first visit there wasn’t the sunniest, but sunny enough to understand why the ski resort is called the sunniest in Europe. Due to many school classes on a day trip, we experienced some bottle necks at the lifts, but other than that, it was great fun. We timed 1 hour 15 minutes from La Perla de Frigiliana to the ski resort garage on Thursday morning, so as we have said before, this is a perfect resort also for skiers! At least we had a great time skiing and of course a pleasant after ski at the Villa with our friends that were skiing with us.

To some guests’ unfortunate, we had to close down the pool for four days in the beginning of February. We had to replace some tiles and redo quite a bit of the seaming. We have a large pool! If we hadn’t realized it before, now we know. It took over three hours to empty the pool through the drain and it took 26 hours to fill it up through a hose. After the filling the heater was on day and night for 48 hours to set the temperature right. Now we are back to normal overnight heating and the pool temperature is back to its normal 24-26 degrees for you to enjoy. As we renovated the pool, we also painted the roof and did some other refurbishing, so the pool area is now ready for the busy spring and summer season.

Our olive trees in the garden also got a trim. They look quite bold now, but as spring advances we are sure they will get their branches and leaves back. There is still some work to be done in the garden, but everything should be finished by summer.

The nights are still quite chilly but as the days are getting warmer, we are looking forward to summer.

Until next time, with love, Maarit & Hannu
