News from La Perla
It's wonderful August and it's so busy and so many lovely things to do, so many events and parties to attend that we are almost out of breath!
The temperature is steady 26-36oC (night-day) and calm winds caress you from the Mediterranean. If they happen to turn blowing from the North, from inland, they can be hot winds feeling like a blow-dryer brushing your hair. Any way it is lovely, our guests and us seem to love it and luckily, so far, we have avoided all the wild forest fires and smoke hazards in this area. Fingers crossed that it would remain so.
As you may remember from some of the previous blog posts, it was really rainy winter and spring. It was great for nature, but now we realized that it was also great for the summer and our adventurous guests and us. Our river Higueron has still a lot of water and it serves as an alternative place of escape and enjoyment to the beach. You can take natural showers in the falls and bathe in the pools formed by nature (some formed by human assistance). It is a wonderful route from La Perla to
Frigiliana by the river Higueron! There are steep roads down and up the riverbed and water have made some parts of the route more demanding than before. You cannot walk it with dry feet, so you need proper shoes that can be wet, but it is still worth it if you are physically able. It is little less than 3 kilometers to Frigiliana by the riverbed. Take a lot of drinking water on your journey and maybe a towel or some dry clothes and you will have a great adventure.
There is of course the option of beach and there are many great ones. The only challenge in August with the beaches is where to park your car if you have one and where to park your towel or chair because the beaches are so crowded. If you go by car, we suggest that you leave early and park your car at the Balcon Garage that is underneath the Plaza de España. It is central, not too expensive, and there are a variety of beaches to choose from. You can also explore the beautiful Nerja centrum at the same time.
If our own pool is not enough for you or maybe you want to enjoy an outdoor pool, did you know that there is a big communal outdoor pool in Frigiliana? They have also a pool bar and a gym over there, so if the family wants different activities, it is possible. Like the old town, the communal pool is within walking distance of us.
It is mid-August now and the biggest festival in Frigiliana is closing in. The Tres Cultures Festival starts on the 27th and ends on the 30th of August. For days of festivities with live music, performances, a tapas route and much more. This event gathered over 40 000 people to Frigiliana last year. They are expecting even more this year so be prepared!
There are so many happenings in August that it’s hard to track every one of them. One that we do recommend, especially for the younger generation, is Nerja’s annual Fiesta Blanca – the White Party. Set on the beach just below the Balcón de Europa at Playa El Salón, the White Party is all about celebrating summer by the Mediterranean, dressed in white.
